We had a lot of independence to do whatever we wanted during our time off, so I chose to experience a little of everything. I was able to do something different every day and weekend. Throughout my time there, I had the opportunity to explore the market in town which had clothes and food everywhere you looked, went on a hike on Mount Kenya which allowed me to get a small glimpse of the natural beauty that Kenya has to offer, take a trip to a different town called Nyeri, and spend quality time with the other volunteers going for dinners or swimming.

I had just finished my exams, achieving the grades I wanted but still had no offers from medical schools to study this year. This meant I had a year out of education, and thus, could pursue aspirations I had always wanted to, like volunteering abroad.

Zainab A

We organised safaris, trips to other cities such as Nakuru and Nairobi. We used the public transport for travel (tuktuks and matatus) and hired a safari car for some of the activities. We also attended cultural shows, which helped us gain a better insight into Kenyan culture and traditions.

Emily R

There was never a dull moment; I was constantly in touch with the Projects Abroad staff and all the volunteers I met, making plans to embark on new adventures every day.

Adrian D

I was working in the accident and emergency department seeing injuries and illnesses that you would never have suspected to see at home. . . We were also given opportunities to help clean and bandage wounds, help with pharmacy runs, take patients for X-rays, take blood samples to the lab and accompany the doctors and nurses on hospital rounds.

On the way to my placement, I met three members of the Projects Abroad staff. I, like many other volunteers, was extremely nervous, but these three people made me feel welcome and answered all my questions. I was given general information about Ghana and a daylong tour around the city in which I would live and work for my entire placement.

Devon F

It was a wonderful experience. I will definitely be making a return to this place.

Venus K

I wanted to do some volunteering to build a stronger resume to fulfill my future goals of getting into medical school. In order to get into medical school, you have to have so many hours of shadowing physicians and this is where my journey with Projects Abroad in Mongolia began.

Barbara L

I was able to shadow doctors throughout many departments within the hospital. This is where I was able to watch my first surgery! It was quite the experience. I was also able to volunteer in the outpatient department as well as the radiology oncology unit.

Kelsey C

From the moment I got off the plane in Nepal, I felt the support of Projects Abroad. They picked me up from the airport, took me to the hotel, went over the project I would be working on and then showed me around Thamel.

Jose L

I came into my medical placement knowing nearly nothing about medicine other than the fact that I wanted one day to work in the field, and I left knowing exactly what branch of surgery I want to specialise in.

Chrishny K

Working at this hospital was definitely very interesting as I had the chance to see variety of illnesses such as dengue fever, lots COPD cases and even a leprosy case.

Michael L

Observing procedures that were as simple as IV insertions and skin tests, to more complex procedures such as tubal ligation surgeries and cyst removals were fascinating.

Jessica H

I assisted nurses a lot with care of minor injuries and giving stitches. I also worked a couple of days in the lab, testing for blood types, haemoglobin levels and parasites. I was actually able to use some of the skills I learned in the lab in my next semester of university.

Mario M

I went into this experience with an open mind, expecting to learn more about the medical field and gain experience in a hospital setting. Little did I know that I would leave Tanzania not only gaining invaluable medical experience, but also learning about myself and the human experience as a whole.

Angela H

My time overseas was truly an extraordinary, life-changing opportunity, all thanks to the incredible surgeons of Bệnh Viện Nhi (BVN) as well as the spectacular Projects Abroad staff.

Madison B

It was such an incredible opportunity to learn about Vietnam’s health care system and seeing how my chosen profession is practiced in a developing country.

Leanne A

I have just finished my second year of studying medicine at the University of Manchester, England. I have always been interested in paediatrics and I love to travel and experience different cultures, so volunteering with Projects Abroad seemed like the perfect opportunity.

How are our Medicine & Healthcare Internships different?

At Projects Abroad, our first aim is to benefit the communities we work in. You can be assured that your medical internship is ethical, well supported, and part of a better future. Here are just a few elements of our work that set it apart from other internships:

Recording our work in a secure database

We track the positive impact our projects have, including our medical projects. This allows us to use data to shape medical outreaches and health awareness programmes. We can also monitor individuals we see often, report our results, and collect data for research.

Read our Impact Report.

Real work with trained professionals

On our medical placements, you’ll work alongside real healthcare professionals. You can observe them in their everyday work, see how they interact with real patients, ask questions, and learn more about their experience. By going abroad too, you’re likely to get more insights into the frontline of medical care than in your home country.

A tailored approach

We are often able to tailor a medical internship to your interests. You can work in more than one department or focus on one particular area, or experience outreach work in the local community.

Our Medicine & Healthcare Policy

We take the safety of our medical volunteers abroad and the people they work with very seriously. That’s why we’ve put in place a comprehensive Medical Ethics Policy.
