Learning Service

Learning Service

Shaping global citizens through collaboration and cultural exchange

You might be familiar with ‘Service Learning’, but our approach centres on Learning Service, where students begin by listening to and learning from local communities before engaging in meaningful volunteer work.

We work closely with educators and administrators to carefully design programs that are both educational and meaningful for high school students, while also aligning with your school’s specific learning goals.

As a certified B Corporation, we’re committed to the highest standards of social and environmental impact.

Each trip reflects our commitment to long-term, climate-positive impact, and to fostering cross-cultural understanding.

We took part in various workshops such as a TB and Malaria, Tropical Diseases, a HIV/AIDS workshop and a Surgical Workshop (where we even sutured chickens!). These workshops gave us an interesting insight into how hospitals in less developed countries work and how these diseases seriously affect the population.

Our trip to Costa Rica was truly the trip of lifetime particularly when considering the entirely new experiences which we had and the wide variety of people who we met.

The impact of the hard work and the constant interacting with excited children was made so much easier by the wonderful Projects Abroad. They organised lots of events to help us relax while simultaneously helping us adjust to Ghanaian life.

It was only by working abroad that the realisation dawned upon me: through volunteering, we all have the power to change someone’s life, even in the smallest possible way. It may not seem like the work we do matters at the time, but it has a good impact on those who we are helping.

My trip to Nepal was amazing. The country is beautiful and really different to the UK. The work we did was actually making a difference and the experience is something I will never forget.

When I take groups of Girl Guides abroad, I want to give them the opportunity to visit countries that are outside their comfort zone, and not the ones they would normally go to on family holidays. Mongolia ticked all of these boxes.

A pathway to global citizenship

Empower your students to become lifelong global citizens, equipped with the knowledge and passion to make a real difference. They’ll return home with more than just memories – they’ll have the tools to create positive change.

Each programme is tailored to meet your specific learning outcomes, aligning to your curriculum and enhancing your students’ development.

  • Peer-to-Peer Interaction: Through workshops with local students, your students will be exposed to different cultures, confronted with a diverse set of perspectives, and given an appreciation of their position within a global context.
  • Cross-cultural Collaboration: In partnership with host communities, your students will observe, understand, and collaborate on locally-led solutions to global challenges.
  • Create Lasting Change: Projects Abroad is more than a trip — it’s a movement. Join a global network of over 140,000 changemakers working towards a more just and equitable world.

Putting the learning in Learning Service

Why are we calling it learning service and not service learning?

For us, learning service emphasises gaining knowledge and understanding from local communities.

This means you are able to contribute effectively, rather than viewing volunteer travel as a simple opportunity to serve.

Our approach shifts the focus from short-term, ‘feel-good’ projects to long-term personal and global impact, fostering true global citizenship through immersive learning experiences.

Your students will leave with the essential skills needed for success in our interconnected world.

They will hone these skills through:

  • Intercultural competence: Immersed in different cultures, students will develop deeper cultural awareness and gain an understanding of their role within our global community.
  • Confidence & Resilience: Step outside of their comfort zones, building resilience and embracing new challenges.
  • Global Citizenship: First-hand knowledge of global issues and contributing to sustainable solutions.
  • Personal Growth & Wellbeing: Prioritising their physical and mental wellbeing, students will foster a healthy learning environment and a more open mind.
  • Leadership & Empowerment: By developing independent thinking, students can challenge the status quo and exercise new transformative decision-making skills.
  • Critical Thinking: Analyse complex issues from multiple perspectives, enhancing problem-solving abilities.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Learning to work effectively with diverse groups, bridging cultural and language barriers.
  • Communication Skills: By communicating clearly and confidently with people from all walks of life.
  • Ethical Awareness: And most importantly, your students will understand ethical considerations within a global context, fostering responsibility and integrity.
