What you need to know
Overview
This project is perfect if you’re an undergraduate student hoping to take your theory-based business knowledge to the next level. If you’re a recent graduate, you’ll also benefit, as you’ll gain practical experience before seeking a job.
You should be at least a second-year university student in fields related to business, finance, economics, marketing, or human resources or have a background in these fields.
Business work experience in Mongolia will give you insight into global business practices, boost your CV, and give you the chance to network with professionals.
An internship of this kind also prepares you for the working world and helps you practise the skills needed to be a successful businessperson. You will excel in your internship if you are punctual, professional, and hard-working at your business placement in Mongolia.
Please note that to engage with your colleagues and clients, you should have conversational English skills. You’ll also need to bring your personal laptop with you on the project.
A Day in the Life
Working hours are usually between 9am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
At the start of each day, you’ll eat breakfast with your Mongolian host family, then prepare for your working day. Dressed smartly and with your laptop packed in your bag, you’ll either walk to your placement or use public transport.
Punctuality and professionalism are important in a Mongolian workplace. When you arrive at your placement, you’ll chat with your supervisor about the tasks for that day. Use this time to ask your colleagues questions and get advice on challenging assignments.
Your work may include a research study you have undertaken or a presentation you’ve been asked to prepare. Tasks will be assigned to you by your supervisor. Write down your questions, ask staff for advice, or join meetings when possible.
Free time and weekends are the perfect time to explore Mongolia’s cultural and historical side. Roam Ulaanbaatar’s streets, spend time with your host family, or plan a weekend trip to visit the nomads and see the vast roaming plains of Mongolia.
Aims & Impact
The main aim of this internship is to give you practical work experience in a professional setting and broaden your business knowledge. You’ll learn the ins and outs of companies working in different sectors.
English is very important on the Mongolian business scene. Companies working with international clients need to be comfortable with their English skills. You’ll work with colleagues who want to practise their English with you. This is a great opportunity to help your colleagues improve their English skills.
Regardless of which company you end up working with, you will have a role to play. Work hard, use your initiative, be ready to learn, and you’ll have the business experience of a lifetime!
Activities
On this Business internship in Mongolia, you can expect to:
- Gain practical business experience while working alongside professionals
- Learn about business practices and opportunities within a developing country
- Lead training and workshops to help local staff at smaller companies
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Gain practical business experience
The hands-on experience you’ll get at your business placement in Mongolia will make your CV stand out. You’ll assist with research, attend business meetings (when possible), and apply your academic knowledge to real-world situations.
Depending on your placement, you could find yourself writing project proposals or coming up with new organisational development ideas. All activities are guided by professional staff at your placement.
Learn about business practices and opportunities within a developing country
This internship is also a great opportunity for you to learn. In Mongolia, many firms work with international clients and deal with issues around cross-border contracts. Learn about where international clients can invest, conduct research, or provide information to foreign investors.
You will also find that English plays an important role in Mongolian businesses. Use your English language skills to quickly assess the practices of your placement, and compare this to your home country.
Lead training and workshops to help local staff at smaller companies
As some of the companies we work with are in their developing stages, you can have a bigger impact there. Help with the training of staff, or organise workshops to develop the skills of employees. This is a chance to put your theory into practice!
You can also give English lessons to staff at your business placement, boosting staff capacity.
Map & Location
With 250 sunny days a year, it’s perfect for outdoor adventures. Attend the Naadam festival, a showcase of wrestling, horse racing, and archery. And don’t miss the world’s largest equestrian statue, a tribute to Genghis Khan.
Ulaanbaatar
Home to half of Mongolia’s population, the capital city of Ulaanbaatar is a fascinating blend of old and new. Located in north-central Mongolia, it is at a crossroad between it’s better known neighbours, China and Russia.
You will see skyscrapers and traditional tents side-by-side, workers in suits and monks in conversation, and surviving monasteries from pre-soviet occupation.
It is the world’s coldest capital city, but often reaches warm temperatures in the summer!
Food & Accommodation
Settle into your home away from home in Mongolia. We provide everything you need for a comfortable and enriching stay, including a clean bed, three meals a day, and access to clean drinking water. You’ll be welcomed into the home of a carefully vetted local family, hand-picked by Projects Abroad, who will introduce you to a brand new way of life.
Your host family’s house will be safe, secure, and clean, giving you somewhere to relax and rest with other Projects Abroad participants. Speak with your host family, share your culture, and experience theirs while enjoying delicious home-cooked food.
Transport to and from your placement is organised entirely by our team, so you’ll never need to stress about navigating somewhere you don’t know.
Free Time and Leisure
Mongolia is one of the most remote countries in the world. Volunteering here is a chance to experience a completely different way of life.
Our projects are based in Ulaanbaatar, the country’s capital. This city is an eclectic mix of modern and traditional. The Government Palace is a perfect example of this, with it’s old-world style architecture and glowing blue and gold lights.
Even when you’re in the city, you’re never far from the countryside. Just a quick trip can take you out to a nomad settlement, where you can meet travelling families who live in traditional gers. We recommend going on a horse ride or trek to take in the beauty of the endless countryside horizons.
The famous statue of Genghis Khan, the largest equestrian statue in the world, is a must-see. You can also learn about the country’s history at the National Museum of Mongolia.
We run a range of different projects in Mongolia so there will likely be other volunteers in the country with you. So you can travel alone or explore the country with a group of like-minded new friends.
Your Arrival Made Easy
When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Mongolia Arrival Procedures page.
