What you need to know

Overview

Our Dentistry internship in Nepal is perfect if you are pursuing a career in dentistry. You’ll get a deeper insight into dental practices in a developing country, and you’ll be able to build your knowledge of practical dentistry. This kind of work experience will add value to your CV and give you interesting points to talk about in applications and interviews.

No previous experience is needed at your dentistry placement in Nepal. We have professional staff on hand to guide you and answer your questions. This is the perfect opportunity to discover firsthand if this is the career for you and what your life might be like as a dentist.

This project runs all year round, so you can organise a trip whenever it suits your schedule. You can join for as long as you like, with a minimum duration of two weeks.

A Day in the Life

A typical workday in Nepal will be from Monday to Friday, with a 5- to 6-hour morning or afternoon shift. This will vary depending on when procedures or outreaches are scheduled.

Each day, you’ll eat breakfast and dinner with your host family. You’ll have lunch at the hospital canteen. Use meal times to chat with your host family, other interns, or hospital staff.

During your shift, you’ll shadow dentists as they treat and speak to patients. We encourage you to take notes, ask questions, and learn as much as you can from the procedures and interactions you see.

You will also take part in regular Projects Abroad outreaches. These are focused on providing disadvantaged or vulnerable people with much-needed dental and medical care.

When you’re not working, spend your free time exploring Nepal with fellow interns. Use this opportunity abroad to learn more about Nepal’s rich culture and natural wonders. Seeking adventure? Go trekking, white-water rafting, or enjoy a jungle safari.

Activities

You’ll work in the dental department of a private community hospital. There are plenty of ways you can learn and gain dentistry work experience in Nepal during your internship. These are some of your main tasks:

  • Shadow and observe local dentists and experience their daily routine
  • Raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene during outreach work
  • Participate in a case study project comparing Nepal and your home country’s dental practices

Your work will focus on these areas:

Shadow and observe local dentists and experience their daily routine

The main focus of your internship is to observe dentists as they work in the dental department of a private community hospital. You will see procedures and minor surgeries such as dental restorations, root canal treatments, or tooth extractions. You can use this time to expand your practical knowledge and get a first-hand look at the reality of being a dentist in a busy hospital.

Raise awareness of the importance of oral hygiene during outreach work

When possible, you will help at Projects Abroad medical outreaches. You will speak to children about the importance of oral hygiene and show them how to brush their teeth through songs, games, or fun activities.

Participate in a case study project comparing Nepal and your home country’s dental practices

You will be asked to participate in a case study programme during your internship. You will observe how patients are diagnosed and treated in Nepal in comparison to your home country. You will also research how such ailments would be treated in different countries around the world. Your final task will be to give an informal presentation to other interns on your findings.

Aims & Impact

The aim of this project is to give you the opportunity to expand your practical knowledge of dentistry. We also work to help disadvantaged people gain better access to basic dental care.

Almost 25% of Nepal’s population lives below the poverty line. With this statistic so high, access to basic healthcare for disadvantaged groups can be a challenge. We work with a private community hospital that aims to provide quality health services at an affordable price for the local community. In addition, we also run outreaches in underprivileged communities. At outreaches, the focus is on raising awareness about the importance of good oral hygiene.

Projects Abroad medical outreaches are free for people who attend.

To ensure that we continue working towards long-term, sustainable outcomes, we have committed to several goals in our Medical Management Plan:

  • Encourage an understanding of medical practices and promote an exchange of medical knowledge
  • Improve hygiene standards
  • Promote awareness of non-communicable diseases
  • Improve access to basic healthcare for disadvantaged groups

Join us on a Dentistry internship in Nepal to kickstart your dental career today.

In the evenings and over weekends, it’s worth taking some time to see the sights of Kathmandu. This includes Durbar Square, where you can stand in the midst of an ancient palace, and the towering spectacle of the Boudhanath Stupa.

Nepal is one of our most popular destinations, so there will be many other volunteers in the country during your trip. This gives you the freedom to spend your leisure time either exploring alone or in a group.
