Overview
Our medical placements in Nepal for high school students are perfect for you if you want to add medical work experience to your CV. It may also help you decide if medicine is the right career path for you.
Not only will medical work experience for teenagers in Nepal add value to your CV, it will give you interesting points to talk about in applications and interviews. You’ll be able to talk about different medical specialties, as well as the insight you got into healthcare practices in a developing country.
You don’t need previous experience to join, as this internship is strictly observational. The focus is on learning.
We’ll teach you how to diagnose and treat the diseases you see, and you’ll be able to ask questions and take notes. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend lectures at a teaching hospital.
This Teen Programme runs over fixed dates, and you can choose the trip that best fits your schedule. You’ll get to observe medical practices and learn about Nepali culture while travelling around Chitwan and the surrounding areas.
Aims & Impact
The aim of this project is to provide you with an insight into the medical field. By doing so, we hope it will give you a deeper understanding of medical practices in a developing country. You can also use your work experience to help you decide whether this is the right career path for you.
Along with other high school students, you’ll observe the work of qualified doctors as they treat patients in a hospital setting. You’ll get a first hand glimpse at what work you could do in the future if you study medicine. Rotating through various hospitals and different departments will also help build your medical knowledge. This could range from general medicine and eye specialisms, to family planning and physiotherapy.

Activities
You’ll rotate through various hospitals in the Chitwan District. There is a wide scope for you to observe and learn while you are in Nepal. Here are a few of the tasks you’ll be involved in:
At our medicine placements for teens in Nepal, your work will be split into four areas:
Observe the work of professional medical staff as you rotate through several different hospitals
Since this internship is mainly observational, you’ll have the opportunity to shadow medical staff in many different departments. By doing so, you’ll be exposed to many different fields of medicine, which may even influence the direction you’ll take with a specialisation someday. A few of the medical fields you’ll learn about include:
- Physiotherapy
- Family planning
- Eye health
- Cancer treatments
Attend lectures at a teaching hospital that will help you improve your basic medical skills
To help you prepare for a future in medicine, you’ll sit in on lectures at a teaching hospital. You’ll join local medical students to see what it will be like once you start studying. These lessons will build your practical medical knowledge, and teach you basic medical skills.
Experience life in Nepal while learning more about the country’s history and culture
Your supervisors have put together an itinerary that is the perfect balance between medical work experience and adventure. They will accompany you throughout your stay and ensure you get to see more of what Nepal has to offer before you leave. You’ll get to see a few of the famous national parks, visit traditional Buddhist temples, and learn how to cook Nepalese dumplings.
Form lifelong friendships with other teenagers with similar interests
The teenagers who join this project are usually there for the same reason. They want to learn more about the medical field and decide if they want to become doctors. You can use this common factor to get to know one another. This is a great way to meet people your age from all over the world. Who knows, you may find yourself building friendships that last a lifetime!
Map & Location
Nepal is gaining traction as a tourist destination thanks to its incredible religious and cultural history, low crime rate, and unique landscape. Plus, it’s the perfect place to embrace your spiritual side.
Bharatpur
Bharatpur is the medical centre for Nepal and is the third largest city in the country. About a five hour drive from the capital Kathmandu, Bharatpur is famous for its access to Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot.
With a subtropical climate, the area around Bharatpur is home to crocodiles, rhinos, and Bengal Tigers, which you may even see on a safari. If you’d rather explore within the city, you’ll find charming local shops, temples, and the vast Bishazari Tal lake.
Kathmandu
The capital city of Nepal and home to about one million people, Kathmandu is located in a valley surrounded by the Himalayas. It is culturally and religiously mixed, experiencing a varied climate with cool winters and hot summers.
You’ll find ancient temples and stupas sharing space with thriving eateries and modern skyscrapers, all with the backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The scenery alone makes it no surprise that it is the focal point for Nepal’s history, art, culture, and economy.
Food & Accommodation
We’ll provide everything you need for a comfortable and unforgettable trip to Nepal, including a clean bed, three meals a day, and fresh drinking water. Our team will also handle your transport to and from your placement, allowing for stress-free travel around the country.
You’ll stay in a modern hotel in the heart of the local community with a room that is clean, comfortable, and safe. We will try to have you share a room with at least one other participant of the same gender and a similar age, giving you the chance to share the trip of a lifetime with new friends.
Rest in communal areas of the hotel and enjoy traditional food, cooked on site. Share your culture with fellow travellers, discover the new one on your doorstep, and get a whole new perspective on the world.
