Wildlife Conservation Volunteering Abroad

Roll up your sleeves and grab your backpack. Things are going to get muddy. Our wildlife conservation volunteer projects will put you at the cutting edge of ecosystem and animal protection in incredible environments around the world.

You’re in the right place if you want to experience working with animals abroad. You could get access to the Galapagos National Park, live and work in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest, or protect Africa’s Big 5 on the savannah.

Learn from professional environmentalists, scientists, and local community members while participating in real wildlife conservation work. Develop key skills in the field and grow as a person, building your confidence, teamwork, and communication ability.

Travel and learn alongside other volunteers passionate about wildlife conservation and build connections will last a lifetime. You’ll work with animals overseas and return home a completely different person, with a fresh perspective and a global mindset.

I went into the jungle and a few things about that were not as expected…first of all I expected there to be loads of snakes, well maybe there are, but you don’t see ‘em!

If you have the chance to go to Barra Honda, I would highly recommend you take it and start an adventure of your own. It is one you are not likely to forget. Pura vida!

The Costa Rican saying ‘Pura Vida’, meaning ‘pure life’ sums up Costa Rica as a whole. Everyone and everything made Costa Rica the epitome of a paradise, and it was this experience that has created very special memories for me.

I would say the most important thing is don’t take my word for it: see for yourself.

Geography has always fascinated me and the opportunity provided by Projects Abroad to live in the rainforest for five weeks and carry out my fieldwork has proved only to further fuel both my passion for the subject and my love of travelling.

For me there were many highlights, but the top of the list would have to be living in the Himalayas, surrounded only by mountain, jungle and even the ever-present monsoon mist, which gave me a unique glimpse into mountain life that ordinary tourists would never get to see.

I went to Costa Rica hoping to change my life and do something meaningful. I accomplished that and so much more.

Diving is a great experience. I saw so many beautiful things, sea turtles, sea lions, shipwrecks. It was great to master a new skill. I loved doing surveys and learning about the different species that live here. I also learnt a lot about corals and had many interesting conversations about conservation with Pablo.

I decided on the Conservation project in South Africa/Botswana because the idea of working in such a secluded and animal-orientated environment was a very exciting prospect for me.

The main reason I decided to come to Ghandruk was for the conservation, and with the number of species and the scenery, this was amazing.

Sally M

I loved actively helping out and removing the fences that were harming animals and blocking their migratory paths. It felt like I was really making a difference!

We spent a morning cutting back brambles and weeds with machetes in the 2 hectare otoy plantation managed by PA and on another day worked in the Galapaguera greenhouses tending young endemic plants, part of the initiative to re-establish native flora.

I chose the Galapagos because I love wildlife, have always been intrigued by the islands and could combine teaching and conservation. It is also an extremely safe environment which I wanted for my first foray into volunteering. William Puga, Projects Abroad’s organiser in San Cristobal, does a great job and makes all volunteers extremely welcome.

Ronald S.

The first few weeks I was working on the island I taught taekwondo. I really enjoyed doing this because I’ve done a lot of martial arts myself in my life. I also really enjoyed having my own group to whom I could transfer my knowledge to.
