Over the three weeks I was there, I administered OT assessments at the rehab centre and at-home visits to determine the patient’s occupational issues. For many of the stroke patients, I used mirror therapy or constraint induced movement therapy to target their affected upper limb. For many of the young children with cerebral palsy, I used play therapy to develop their upper limb and fine motor skills.

Mabuhay! That’s “welcome” in the Philippines, the world’s second-largest archipelago, formed of over 7,000 islands in Southeast Asia. Famous for a unique blend of Asian and Spanish cultures, you will struggle to find a more welcoming country to visit.

The Philippines has incredible biodiversity with many endemic species and unique geological formations, like the popular Chocolate Hills. For a more urban experience, hop in a jeepney or tuk-tuk and enjoy Filipino pastimes like Karaoke and water sports.

Bogo City

Bogo City, located on the northeastern coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines, is a growing city with a population of about 90,000. With a tropical climate, warm temperatures, and sunshine year-round, it is filled with beautiful beaches, lush green hills, and landmarks like the Bogo City Hall.

The city is famous for water sports and natural beauty, including several nearby waterfalls. Despite only being established as a city in 2007, it has all the essentials within easy reach.

San Remigio

San Remigio, neighbouring Bogo City on the northern coast of Cebu Island, is a laid-back town with stunning natural beauty. With over 65,000 residents, it boasts the longest coastline in Cebu, offering a variety of beaches with white sand and crystal-clear waters.

San Remigio has a tropical climate with warm temperatures all year, perfect for exploring the nearby beaches, islands, and historical sites. The town also offers a glimpse into local life with its public market and friendly community.

Meet the team in the Philippines

Ms Tatjana Kotschenreuther

Volunteer Advisor

Tatjana was born in Berlin, Germany. She has a degree in Education and has been living in Mexico since 2003. She previously worked as a volunteer coordinator at the Animal Care Centre in Guadalajara, and as a German teacher at different language schools. She joined the volunteer advisor team in May 2016. In her free time she likes to go to concerts or festivals, exercising, and enjoying nature.

Ms Ayessa Arnoco

Public Health Project Coordinator

Ayessa was born and raised in Bogo City and has always loved being around people. She is a registered nurse and previously worked as an English teacher and coordinator for non-English speakers. Aside from reading pocketbooks, she spends her free time experimenting with foods and eating.

Mr Kenneth Sotto

Country Director

Kenneth is from Cebu and has been involved in development work for 7 years. He has previously volunteered with VSO and was a youth ambassador for the 37th South East Asia Youth Programme in 2010. Before joining Projects Abroad in 2013, he was a managing director of a training centre in Cebu and a project officer for VSO Bahaginan. In his free time he enjoys taking part in Rotary International activities and he likes taking photos and watching movies.

Mr Aquiles Zapanta

Airport Pick-up Coordinator

Acqui joined Projects Abroad in March 2014. He is passionate about travelling and he has been to Singapore, Malaca and Hong Kong. Acqui finished university with Bachelor’s degree in Science, majoring in Psychology. He is a Rotarian and has volunteered as a tour guide for foreign Rotarians who have visited the Philippines. Acqui is also a history teacher and enjoys teaching the volunteers about the history of the Philippines.
